Meng Yu (Chinese: 萌玉, studbook number 1123) is a female giant panda born on May 23, 2018 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding at 5:52 PM.
She is the daughter of Meng Meng (萌萌) — a female from Beijing Zoo — and Mei Lan (美兰, studbook 649), the famous Atlanta-born male. Her full siblings include the internet superstar Meng Lan (萌兰, the “Xizhimen Third Prince”), and her twin sister is Meng Bao (萌宝, studbook 1122).
Meng Yu belongs to one of the most famous panda families in China, known as the “Meng family.” Her siblings include:
On September 10, 2019, Meng Yu and Meng Bao were flown to Beijing Zoo — the first time sub-adult pandas had ever been introduced to the zoo. After a 30-day quarantine period during which they acclimated to Beijing’s climate and learned to eat bamboo independently, they moved into the Olympic Pavilion on October 12, 2019.
At Beijing Zoo, Meng Yu lived alongside her brother Meng Lan, as well as Fu Xing (福星), Dian Dian (点点), and other famous pandas.
On May 23, 2023, Beijing Zoo held a special 5th birthday celebration for Meng Yu.
In September 2025, Meng Yu and Meng Bao were transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center to participate in the breeding program aimed at optimizing the genetic structure of the captive panda population. The move marked the beginning of a new chapter for the twin sisters.
