Hao Hao

Hao Hao (Chinese name 好好, studbook number 873) is a female giant panda born on August 8, 2008, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Her birth date coincided with the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, and her given name, which translates directly to “good good” in Mandarin, was selected to mark the festive, widely celebrated occasion of both the national sporting event and her healthy arrival. Her lineage is fully documented in the center’s official studbook records: she is the offspring of Bing Bing and Gu Gu, two captive-bred giant pandas that were also born and raised at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, with traceable genetic lines spanning multiple generations of the facility’s captive population.

Hao Hao currently resides at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda’s facility within Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, where she participates in the center’s official coordinated captive breeding program for the species. The program is designed to preserve and expand genetic diversity across the global captive giant panda population, a core objective of long-term conservation efforts that also supports planned future reintroduction initiatives to restore panda populations in suitable protected wild habitats.
