Full Narrative

Life Story

Hu Chun (Chinese name: 湖春, studbook number 770) is a female captive-bred giant panda born on September 8, 2010, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Her mother is Tang Tang (studbook number 529), and her father is Fu Ni, descending from a well-documented captive lineage integrated into the official global giant panda conservation breeding program. As a genetically registered individual in the international giant panda studbook system, her lineage is fully tracked to support the long-term genetic diversity management of the captive giant panda population, a core priority for the species’ conservation framework.

On September 8, 2011, her first birthday, Hu Chun was transferred to Taman Safari Indonesia as part of a bilateral cooperative conservation agreement between Chinese and Indonesian wildlife management authorities. She is currently one of the few giant pandas housed in a Southeast Asian zoological institution, and her daily care adheres to international captive management standards developed by global giant panda conservation working groups, with regular veterinary monitoring and species-appropriate enrichment protocols in place to support her long-term health.

Hu Chun plays a central role in Taman Safari Indonesia’s public education programming, with regular public viewing opportunities that draw consistent visitor engagement across local and international tourist groups. Her presence has helped build broader regional awareness of giant panda habitat loss and the global efforts to protect the vulnerable species, as well as the value of cross-national collaboration for endangered wildlife conservation. As an official conservation ambassador, she also supports ongoing collaborative research between Chinese and Indonesian scientists on giant panda acclimatization to tropical climate environments, captive welfare optimization, and public engagement metrics for conservation outreach. The partnership surrounding her care has also catalyzed additional joint initiatives to support native Indonesian endangered species protection, extending the conservation impact of her residency beyond her own species.
