Ya Yi (Chinese: 雅一), is a female giant panda born on August 27, 2013, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. She carries the global studbook number 903 and has become one of the most beloved pandas at Guangzhou Zoo.
Ya Yi is instantly recognizable by her distinctive features:
Ya Yi is known for her exceptionally active and curious temperament:
Ya Yi’s daily diet at Guangzhou Zoo consists primarily of locally grown bamboo varieties:
Father: Yong Yong (勇勇)
Mother: Xing Ya (星雅)
Grandmother: Shu Qing (蜀庆) Maternal Grandfather: Bing Xing (冰星) Maternal Grandmother: Er Ya Tou (二丫头)
Ya Yi spent her first years at the Chengdu Research Base, growing up alongside her twin brother Ya Er and other cubs of the 2013 cohort.
On January 29, 2016, Ya Yi and her cousin Xing Yi arrived at Guangzhou Zoo, replacing the twin sisters Wen Li and Wen Ya who had returned to Chengdu. The pair made their public debut immediately, drawing large crowds to the zoo.
In January 2017, Guangzhou Zoo closed its panda house for renovation. Ya Yi and Xing Yi returned to Chengdu temporarily while the facility underwent a complete upgrade.
On January 18, 2018, Ya Yi and Xing Yi flew back to Guangzhou and moved into the newly renovated panda house. The upgraded facility featured expanded indoor and outdoor spaces with improved enrichment structures.
Videos of Ya Yi performing acrobatic moves — hanging from branches, swinging, and posing — have accumulated millions of views online, earning her the reputation as Guangzhou’s most athletic panda.
Keepers at Guangzhou Zoo communicate with Ya Yi in Cantonese. Videos of her responding to Cantonese commands — such as a keeper saying “你自己拿着” (hold it yourself) in Cantonese while handing her corn ice — went viral, with fans commenting “一方水土养一方熊猫” (each place raises its own pandas).
Due to Ya Yi’s sensitive nature, Guangzhou Zoo has implemented specific guidelines for visitors:
As the first giant panda to reside long-term at Guangzhou Zoo, Ya Yi has:
