Indonesia Panda Timeline

Satrio "Rio" Wiratama made his first public appearance on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the Panda Palace of Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua, Bogor Regency, West Java — appearing alongside his mother Hu Chun before enthusiastic crowds.

Taman Safari Indonesia announced that Rio would gradually begin meeting the public from May 30, 2026, after a joint assessment by the park's life science and veterinary teams with Chinese experts — a time-limited, welfare-first opening.

Rio, Indonesia's first giant panda cub, is in excellent health at six months old. Taman Safari Indonesia confirms all developmental indicators are stable under continuous veterinary monitoring.

Rio left his incubator for the first time for a comprehensive health check, with a media conference attended by Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni and Ambassador Wang Lutong — a media encounter, not a public debut; the first public appearance came on June 9, 2026.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally names Indonesia's first locally born giant panda cub Satrio Wiratama — nicknamed Rio — a name meaning "knight" in Indonesian, on December 4, 2025.

Hu Chun gave birth to Indonesia's first panda cub.

Rio, the first giant panda cub born in Indonesia, was born to Hu Chun and Cai Tao. Named by President Prabowo Subianto, his full name Satrio Wiratama means "brave, noble knight."
