Ai Bao, a female giant panda with the international studbook number 1078, was born on July 13, 2016 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Her parents are male giant panda Meng Yue and female giant panda Ni Ni, and her lineage traces back to captive-bred giant pandas Pan Pan (studbook number 737) and Qing Qing (studbook number 738), both of whom have fully documented genetic records maintained in official Chinese conservation facility archives. This fully traceable genetic background has made Ai Bao a high-priority individual in coordinated global giant panda breeding efforts, as it allows conservationists to avoid inbreeding and maintain the genetic diversity of the captive population, a core goal of ex-situ conservation programs for the vulnerable species.
