Ban Ban

Ban Ban (Chinese: 半半), a female giant panda with studbook number 1290, was born on October 4, 2016, at Shanghai Zoo, to parents Le Bao and Ai Bao. Her birth was the result of coordinated breeding planning overseen by China’s national giant panda conservation management network, which aligns captive pairings with genetic diversity priorities to support the long-term health of the global captive panda population. As of the latest official surveys of China’s captive giant panda population, Ban Ban remains in good physical condition, with routine veterinary monitoring confirming she meets all species-specific health benchmarks for her age group.

Ban Ban has resided at Shanghai Zoo her entire life, participating in the institution’s structured captive management protocols alongside its other resident giant pandas. Her daily routine aligns with typical giant panda behavioral patterns, including devoting up to 14 hours each day to feeding on bamboo and resting in her purpose-built habitat, which is designed to replicate key features of the species’ native mountainous environment in southwestern China.
