Bai Xue

白雪

deceased female Born: January 1, 1988

Bai Xue is a female giant panda born on 1988-01-01 in the wild of the Qinling Mountains. She was captured as a subadult and brought into human care before being transferred to formal captive management for conservation research. She is the offspring of unidentified wild giant panda parents from the Qinling giant panda population. Her wild origin makes her a valuable contributor to the captive giant panda gene pool. Currently living at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, she participates in the center’s captive breeding program for giant panda conservation. Researchers there monitored her health and breeding history for decades before her death in 2015. As a wild-born Qinling giant panda, Bai Xue carried unique genetic diversity not present in many other captive individuals. She contributed multiple offspring to the captive population, supporting the genetic health of the group. Her life helped researchers better understand the integration of wild-born giant pandas into captive breeding programs, advancing global giant panda conservation efforts.

Full Narrative

Life Story

Bai Xue (Chinese name: 白雪, studbook number 351) was a female giant panda born January 1, 1988, in the wild of the Qinling Mountains; conflicting records have noted Minshan or Qionglai wild habitats as potential birth sites, but later genetic analysis confirmed her lineage to the distinct Qinling giant panda population, with her parents belonging to the unmonitored wild Qinling panda cohort. She was captured as a subadult in the late 1980s and brought into initial human care, before being formally transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda on January 1, 1989, to join the organization’s formal conservation research efforts.

Her wild origin made Bai Xue an exceptionally valuable individual for the captive giant panda breeding program, as she carried unique genetic markers not represented in the existing captive population descended from a small pool of founding wild individuals. For decades, researchers at the center closely monitored her health, reproductive behavior, and breeding outcomes, documenting the processes and challenges of integrating wild-born pandas into managed captive care. She produced multiple offspring throughout her breeding lifetime, directly expanding the genetic diversity of the global captive giant panda population and reducing risks of inbreeding in the managed cohort.

Bai Xue died in 2015 while residing at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The long-term data collected across her 26 years in human care has provided researchers with critical insights into the physiological and behavioral adaptations of wild-born pandas to captive environments, as well as best practices for incorporating wild genetic material into breeding programs to support population viability. Her contribution to conservation has been cited in multiple global giant panda management guidelines, supporting the species’ 2016 downgrade from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and ongoing efforts to maintain genetically robust populations for potential future reintroduction initiatives.
