Full Narrative

Life Story

Chuang Chuang, studbook number 522, is a male giant panda born on August 6, 2000 at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. His sire is the giant panda with studbook number 424, known as Pan Pan, and his dam is studbook number 418, named Gongzhu, both registered in the international giant panda studbook system established to track the species’ genetic lineage and support managed breeding efforts. As part of an early cross-border conservation partnership between Chinese and Thai wildlife authorities, Chuang Chuang was selected for international transfer at one year old, moving to Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand on his first birthday, August 6, 2001.

During his residency at Chiang Mai Zoo, Chuang Chuang participated in coordinated giant panda captive breeding research programs, which expanded global scientific understanding of the species’ reproductive physiology, dietary needs in non-native habitats, and adaptive behavioral patterns. Data collected from his care and breeding attempts contributed to revised best practice guidelines for ex situ giant panda management, supporting broader species recovery goals for the vulnerable IUCN-listed animal.

Chuang Chuang also emerged as a prominent cultural and educational ambassador for giant panda conservation during his time in Thailand. He drew hundreds of thousands of regional and international visitors to Chiang Mai Zoo over his lifetime, with many visitors citing the chance to observe him as their primary motivation for travel to the facility. His public profile helped raise widespread public awareness of giant panda habitat loss and conservation needs across Southeast Asia, and he remains a widely recognized symbol of successful Sino-Thai collaborative wildlife protection efforts. All programming centered on Chuang Chuang was aligned with the shared conservation mandates of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and Chiang Mai Zoo, prioritizing both species outcomes and accessible public science education for local and global audiences.
