Cheng Feng

Cheng Feng (Chinese name: 成风) is a female giant panda born on June 11, 2019, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, with the official global studbook number 1191. Her birth was a planned outcome of the base’s systematic captive breeding initiative, one of the core programs supporting global giant panda conservation efforts. Her father is the well-documented male giant panda Mei Lan, and her mother is Chuang Chuang, both long-term residents of the Chengdu Research Base. Her lineage traces back to wild giant panda populations native to the Min Mountains of Sichuan Province, an important genetic origin that adds to the diversity of the global captive panda population.

Since birth, Cheng Feng has resided full-time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where she receives specialized care from the base’s wildlife management team. As a healthy adult member of the captive population, she is included in the base’s coordinated breeding program, which works in alignment with national and international conservation frameworks to maintain and improve the genetic diversity of captive giant pandas, reducing the risk of inbreeding and supporting the long-term viability of the species.

Cheng Feng displays typical giant panda feeding behaviors, devoting approximately 12 hours each day to foraging and consuming bamboo, a pattern that has provided researchers with consistent, valuable data on the foraging habits of captive-bred pandas. She is a popular resident among visitors to the Chengdu base, drawing tourists from across the globe who come to observe her daily activities, and in turn raising widespread public awareness of the threats facing wild giant panda populations and the importance of habitat protection. The long-term observation data collected from her daily life also contributes to ongoing research on panda behavior, reproductive health, and pre-release training protocols, supporting efforts to eventually reintroduce healthy captive-bred giant pandas into protected wild habitats across Sichuan.
