Ling Yan

Ling Yan (Chinese: 灵岩), male giant panda with global studbook number 1086, was born on August 16, 2017 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. His father is Mei Lan and mother is Meng Shuang, both part of the Chengdu Research Base’s breeding population at the time of his birth, placing him in a well-documented lineage of captive-bred giant pandas in China’s ex-situ conservation network. For the first year of his life, he remained at the Chengdu facility under standard care protocols for juvenile giant pandas, receiving regular veterinary monitoring and exposure to species-appropriate socialization and enrichment practices.

On his first birthday, August 16, 2018, Ling Yan was transferred to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai, as part of the coordinated cross-institutional management framework overseen by the China Giant Panda Conservation Program. This program facilitates regulated transfers of individual pandas across accredited zoological institutions to maintain genetic diversity in the captive population, reduce inbreeding risk, and distribute conservation education opportunities to wider public audiences. Prior official records previously listed his residence as Henan Zoo in Zhengzhou, reflecting the dynamic nature of the species’ managed population structure.

Ling Yan is noted for his active, curious temperament, and regularly engages with the varied enrichment devices installed in his enclosure at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, including foraging puzzles, climbing structures, and seasonal sensory stimuli such as ice blocks and fresh bamboo arrangements. His presence draws tens of thousands of visitors to the facility each year, serving as a prominent ambassador for giant panda conservation and driving public awareness of the threats facing wild giant panda populations, including habitat fragmentation and climate change. As a participant in the national ex-situ conservation program, he also contributes to ongoing research on giant panda behavior, nutritional requirements, and captive breeding success, supporting long-term efforts to ensure the species’ continued survival both in human care and in their native mountain habitats in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces.
