Kai Kai is a male giant panda born on 2008-08-04 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. He is listed as studbook number 717 in the global giant panda breeding registry, and remains alive as of the latest population surveys. He is the offspring of Pan Pan (studbook 649) and Ya Ya (studbook 522). Both of his parents are established giant pandas bred within the Chinese captive breeding conservation program for the species. Currently living at Mandai Wildlife Reserve in Singapore, he participates in the organization’s coordinated species conservation and public education initiatives focused on giant pandas. The reserve hosts regular monitoring of his health and behavior as part of international giant panda conservation collaboration. As a charismatic captive-bred giant panda, Kai Kai demonstrates typical species traits including high daily bamboo consumption and extended resting periods. He serves as a cultural ambassador for Chinese wildlife conservation, drawing public attention to giant panda recovery efforts and supporting international research on the species’ biology and habitat needs.

Full Narrative
Kai Kai (Chinese name: 凯凯, studbook number 717) is a male giant panda born on August 4, 2008, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. He is the offspring of sire Mei Lan and dam Chuang Chuang, both part of China’s formal captive giant panda conservation breeding program, with his lineage tracing to foundation breeding individuals Pan Pan (studbook 649) and Ya Ya (studbook 522). As a cub, he received standard veterinary care and species-appropriate socialization at the Chengdu base, part of the institution’s long-running efforts to maintain a genetically diverse captive giant panda population.
Just after his first birthday on August 4, 2009, Kai Kai was transferred to Mandai Wildlife Reserve in Singapore as part of a long-term international conservation collaboration between Chinese wildlife authorities and the Singaporean reserve. Since his arrival, reserve staff have conducted continuous non-invasive monitoring of his health, behavior, and dietary habits, with data shared with global panda conservation research networks to support broader studies of the species’ biological needs and captive care best practices. His daily routine aligns with typical giant panda traits, including consuming 12 to 16 kilograms of bamboo per day and spending roughly 10 to 16 hours resting between feeding sessions.
In his role at Mandai Wildlife Reserve, Kai Kai is a core participant in the organization’s giant panda species conservation and public education programs. Regular public viewings and interpretive programming centered on him and his habitat draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, raising awareness of wild giant panda habitat loss and the international efforts to support the species’ recovery. He also serves as an informal cultural ambassador for Sino-Singapore conservation cooperation, with his public profile helping to drive public and private funding for both captive breeding initiatives and wild panda habitat restoration projects in China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. As of the latest 2024 giant panda population surveys, Kai Kai remains in good health and continues to contribute to ongoing conservation research efforts.
