Fei Fei

Fei Fei, a female giant panda with the Chinese name 飞飞 and official studbook number 602, was born on January 1, 1990, in the wild Minshan Mountains of Sichuan, China, to two unidentified wild giant panda parents native to the range. Consistent with captive panda intake protocols of the early 1990s, no formal paternity or maternity testing was conducted to identify her biological parents after she was recovered as a juvenile shortly after birth and brought into human care. She was first transferred to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on January 1, 1991, where she has resided for the duration of her life under professional conservation care.

Over more than two decades of participation in the Chengdu Base’s ex-situ giant panda conservation and captive breeding program, Fei Fei contributed to multiple core research initiatives led by base scientific teams. Her long-term observation data supported studies on giant panda dietary adaptation to captive feeding regimens, as well as foundational research on wild-born panda reproductive biology in controlled settings, findings that later refined breeding protocols for the entire global captive panda population. As an early wild-caught individual in the Chengdu Base’s founding captive cohort, her distinct wild genetic lineage played a critical role in establishing the genetically diverse breeding group that forms the backbone of the base’s modern conservation program, reducing the risk of inbreeding in successive captive-born generations.

Beyond her scientific contributions, Fei Fei was a long-standing popular attraction for domestic and international visitors to the Chengdu Research Base, with her distinctive wild-born behavioral traits drawing consistent public interest. Her presence helped drive public education efforts focused on the threats facing wild giant panda populations and the importance of habitat protection in their native mountain ranges. Her genetic lineage remains represented in the current global captive giant panda population, continuing to support long-term species conservation goals including potential future reintroduction initiatives for genetically robust individuals to restored wild habitats.
