Short version
Fu Feng (福凤), studbook #1026, is a female giant panda born August 7, 2016 at Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo — one half of the world's first twin cubs raised entirely by their mother in captivity. Twin of Fu Ban, she and her brother proved that captive pandas could successfully raise twins without human intervention. She returned to China on December 4, 2018, spent time at Nanjing Tangshan Ziqinghu Wildlife World, and gave birth to her own twins in October 2025.
Fu Feng (Chinese: 福凤, “Happy Phoenix”), studbook number 1026, is a female giant panda born on August 7, 2016 at Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria. She is the daughter of Yang Yang (阳阳, studbook 525) and Long Hui (龙徽, studbook 526), and the twin sister of Fu Ban (福伴, studbook 1027).
Weighing approximately 60 kg as an adult, Fu Feng has a particular fondness for bamboo shoots and sweet potatoes and is described as playful and curious.
Fu Feng and Fu Ban are the world’s first twin giant panda cubs to be raised entirely by their mother through natural maternal care, without any hand-rearing, formula supplementation, or human assistance. Their birth and successful rearing were hailed as a landmark achievement in panda reproductive biology.
They are also the only naturally conceived twin pair born overseas — all other overseas twin births at the time had involved some form of artificial insemination.
On November 23, 2016, a naming ceremony was held at Schönbrunn Zoo, attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Austria and the Austrian Vice-Chancellor. Her name 福凤 (Fu Feng) means “Happy Phoenix” — paired with her brother’s name 福伴 (Fu Ban, “Happy Companion”), together symbolizing good fortune and companionship.
On December 4, 2018, Fu Feng and Fu Ban flew from Vienna via Frankfurt to Chengdu — becoming the first pair of “returned overseas” twin pandas. After quarantine, she was placed at the China Conservation and Research Center.
On August 28, 2019, Fu Feng was relocated to Nanjing Tangshan Ziqinghu Wildlife World in Jiangsu Province, where she lived for several years as an exhibition panda.
In October 2025, Fu Feng gave birth to her first litter — twins — continuing the tradition of her own birth. Details of the cubs were announced by the China Conservation and Research Center.
Fu Feng weighs about 60 kg and is known for her playful and mischievous personality. She loves bamboo shoots and sweet potatoes, and her keepers describe her as an active, curious panda who enjoys exploring her environment.
