Short version
Fu Hu (福虎, studbook #789) is a male giant panda born August 23, 2010 at Vienna's Schonbrunn Zoo — the second cub of Yang Yang and Long Hui, and the second panda ever born in Europe through natural mating. His name was chosen by Austrian voters from three options. He returned to China in 2012 and now lives at Nanjing Tangshan Ziqinghu with his brother Fu Bao.
Fu Hu (Chinese: 福虎, “Happy Tiger”), studbook number 789, is a male giant panda born on August 23, 2010 at Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria. He is the second cub of Yang Yang (阳阳) and Long Hui (龙徽, studbook 526).
He was the second giant panda born in Europe through natural mating, following his older brother Fu Long (福龙). His birth confirmed that the natural breeding success at Schönbrunn was not a fluke — the pair could reproduce reliably without human intervention.
Fu Hu’s name was chosen through an Austrian public vote, with three options: “Fu Hu” (福虎), “Ao Kang” (奥康), and “Wei Xing” (维兴). “Fu Hu” won, continuing the “Fu” (happiness) theme established by his brother Fu Long. The naming ceremony was held at Schönbrunn on December 13, 2010.
Fu Hu weighed just 100 grams at birth, measuring 10 cm in length. By March 2011 (7 months), he had grown to 13 kg and 91 cm. On March 24, 2011, he made his first outdoor appearance, exploring the zoo’s panda enclosure under careful supervision.
On November 8, 2012, Fu Hu returned to China, settling at the Ya’an Bifengxia Base. After quarantine, he was sent to Jinan Wildlife World on January 30, 2013.
On August 28, 2019, Fu Hu was transferred to the Nanjing Tangshan Ziqinghu Wildlife World, where he currently lives alongside his brother Fu Bao (福豹). As of 2023, his weight had stabilized at approximately 55 kg, with keepers noting his healthy appetite and playful disposition.
