Jia Panpan

Jia Panpan (Chinese name 加盼盼, studbook number 981) is a male giant panda born on October 13, 2015 at Toronto Zoo, the first male giant panda born in Canada in nearly 30 years. His birth was the result of a long-term collaborative conservation partnership between Canadian wildlife institutions and Chinese panda conservation authorities, drawing widespread international public and scientific attention to cross-border efforts to protect the vulnerable species. He is the offspring of Da Mao (studbook number 645) and Er Shun (studbook number 646), two giant pandas loaned to Canada as part of the global coordinated giant panda breeding program overseen by Chinese wildlife management bodies.

In October 2016, on his first birthday, Jia Panpan was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan province, the world’s leading specialized facility for giant panda research, captive breeding and population management. He currently resides at the center, where he participates in its coordinated captive breeding program and public education initiatives designed to raise global awareness of giant panda conservation needs. As a reproductively mature young adult, he contributes to the genetic diversity of the global captive giant panda population, a key priority for efforts to maintain a healthy, self-sustaining population of the species as a buffer against wild population vulnerabilities.

Jia Panpan’s cross-border birth and upbringing have established him as a recognized cultural symbol of successful international conservation cooperation between Canada and China. He exhibits typical species-typical behavior as an adult, devoting the majority of his daily active hours to foraging for and consuming bamboo, alongside species-specific social and enrichment activities provided by the center’s care team. His public profile has supported outreach efforts to educate visitors and global audiences about the ecological needs of giant pandas and the importance of collaborative, cross-national initiatives to protect endangered wildlife.
