Le Le is a male giant panda born on 2021-08-14 at Foping National Nature Reserve. He is registered as studbook number 1315 in the global giant panda studbook maintained by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. He is the offspring of Lu Lu (studbook 731) and Xi Mei (studbook 902). Both of his parents are captive-bred giant pandas that were part of a coordinated breeding program for the species. Currently living at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan, he participates in the center’s giant panda conservation breeding and public education programs. He also undergoes regular health monitoring as part of the center’s long-term research on giant panda biology and welfare. As one of the few giant pandas born to parents from different captive breeding populations, Le Le supports genetic diversity efforts for the species. He is a popular attraction for conservation visitors, helping raise public awareness about giant panda protection. Giant pandas are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, and coordinated breeding programs like the one Le Le is part of remain critical to the species’ long-term survival.

Full Narrative
Le Le (Chinese name: 叻叻) is a male giant panda born on August 14, 2021, at the Fuping Wild Panda Habitat in the Qinling Mountains, with an official global giant panda studbook number of 1315. His lineage traces to captive-bred parents Zhu Hai and Sihun, who were part of a coordinated cross-population breeding program designed to strengthen the genetic diversity of the managed giant panda population. For the first year of his life, he remained under close observation at the Fuping site, where care teams monitored his developmental milestones, including first steps, solid food introduction, and socialization with his mother, to ensure he met standard health benchmarks for cubs of his age.
On his first birthday in August 2022, Le Le was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan, where he resides permanently. He is integrated into the center’s core conservation initiatives, including its formal breeding program and ongoing public education outreach activities. Routine veterinary check-ups, behavioral tracking, and dietary assessments are conducted for Le Le as part of the center’s long-term research into giant panda physiology, reproductive health, and optimal welfare standards for individuals in human care.
Le Le holds notable conservation value as one of a small cohort of giant pandas born to parents from separate captive breeding populations, a pairing strategy intended to reduce inbreeding risk and support the long-term genetic resilience of the species. While the giant panda was reclassified from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2016, coordinated breeding programs remain a critical pillar of species recovery efforts, and Le Le’s genetic profile makes him a key contributor to these efforts. He is also a popular draw for visitors to the Wolong center, where his public exhibit helps educate domestic and international tourists about giant panda habitat protection, the threats facing wild populations, and the role of managed care programs in supporting species survival.

Panda adoption and corporate sponsorship programs fund millions in conservation annually. This article explains how panda adoptions work, what they cost, what sponsors receive in return, and how corporate panda partnerships function as both conservation funding and brand strategy.

When you protect a giant panda's bamboo forest, you're not just saving pandas — you're sheltering golden monkeys, takin, red pandas, clouded leopards, and over 10,000 plant species that share the same habitat. This article explains the 'umbrella species' concept through the panda's ecosystem, showing how conservation investments in one charismatic animal ripple outward to protect entire mountain ecosystems.

Unlike brown bears and black bears, giant pandas do not hibernate — despite living in mountains that receive over 150 centimeters of snow annually. This article explains the energy economics that prevent panda hibernation, the seasonal vertical migration strategy they use instead, and the physiological adaptations that allow pandas to survive winter at 2,500 meters without ever entering torpor.
