Le Le

Le Le (Chinese name: 叻叻) is a male giant panda born on August 14, 2021, at the Fuping Wild Panda Habitat in the Qinling Mountains, with an official global giant panda studbook number of 1315. His lineage traces to captive-bred parents Zhu Hai and Sihun, who were part of a coordinated cross-population breeding program designed to strengthen the genetic diversity of the managed giant panda population. For the first year of his life, he remained under close observation at the Fuping site, where care teams monitored his developmental milestones, including first steps, solid food introduction, and socialization with his mother, to ensure he met standard health benchmarks for cubs of his age.

On his first birthday in August 2022, Le Le was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan, where he resides permanently. He is integrated into the center’s core conservation initiatives, including its formal breeding program and ongoing public education outreach activities. Routine veterinary check-ups, behavioral tracking, and dietary assessments are conducted for Le Le as part of the center’s long-term research into giant panda physiology, reproductive health, and optimal welfare standards for individuals in human care.

Le Le holds notable conservation value as one of a small cohort of giant pandas born to parents from separate captive breeding populations, a pairing strategy intended to reduce inbreeding risk and support the long-term genetic resilience of the species. While the giant panda was reclassified from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2016, coordinated breeding programs remain a critical pillar of species recovery efforts, and Le Le’s genetic profile makes him a key contributor to these efforts. He is also a popular draw for visitors to the Wolong center, where his public exhibit helps educate domestic and international tourists about giant panda habitat protection, the threats facing wild populations, and the role of managed care programs in supporting species survival.
