Short version
Lou Sheng (楼生, studbook #562) is a female giant panda born August 2, 2003 at the Qinling Panda Research Center — the first artificially-bred panda in Shaanxi Province. Initially mistaken for male, she went on to become a "Hero Mother" with 7 cubs. Her daughter Yong Yong made her a grandmother, creating a "four generations living" lineage with her mother Xue Xue.
Lou Sheng (Chinese: 楼生, meaning “born at Louguantai”), studbook number 562, is a female giant panda born on August 2, 2003 at the Qinling Giant Panda Research Center (formerly the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue Center) — the first panda ever successfully bred through artificial means in Shaanxi Province, breaking the province’s “zero” record.
Her mother is Xue Xue (雪雪, studbook 444) — who was approximately 15 years old at the time — and her father is Ping Ping (屏屏).
Because the center had no prior experience with newborn panda cubs, Lou Sheng’s gender was initially identified as male. Keepers treated her as a male until she reached adulthood and displayed clear female estrus behavior, forcing a correction.
Lou Sheng has given birth to 5 litters with 7 cubs:
| Year | Cubs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 | Long Long (龙龙), Feng Feng (凤凤) | Twins |
| 2014 | Twins | |
| 2017 | Qiang Sheng (强生) | Male |
| 2019 | Qin Ku’er (秦酷儿) | Female, 111g |
| 2021 | Female cub, 121g | First cub of 2021 at the center |
Lou Sheng’s daughter Yong Yong (永永) gave birth in 2020, creating a four-generation living lineage (四世同堂) : Xue Xue → Lou Sheng → Yong Yong → Yong Yong’s cub — a milestone for the Qinling subspecies program.
