Basic Profile

Xue Xue (Chinese: 雪雪, “Snow Snow”), studbook number 444, is a wild-born female giant panda discovered in Baoxing County, Sichuan in approximately 1988. She was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas in March 1996.

In October 2002, she was moved to the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Research Center (Louguantai), where she has lived ever since. She is currently housed at the Qinling Panda Research Center.

The 38-Year-Old Matriarch

At approximately 38 years old (as of 2026), Xue Xue is one of the oldest living giant pandas in the world. She receives specialized geriatric care — her diet is adjusted based on her weight, appetite, and activity levels. Keepers monitor her daily.

Mei Xiang

Xue Xue’s most famous daughter, Mei Xiang (studbook 473) , lived at the Smithsonian National Zoo from 2000 to 2023, giving birth to Tai Shan, Bao Bao, Bei Bei, and Xiao Qi Ji. She returned to China in November 2023.

Four Generations

Xue Xue’s daughter Lou Sheng (楼生) gave birth to Yong Yong (永永) , who in turn gave birth in 2020, creating a four-generation living lineage (四世同堂) — a milestone for the Qinling captive breeding program.
