Lu Lu

Lu Lu, a male giant panda with the global studbook number 561, was born on September 21, 1999, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. He is the offspring of dam Pan Pan, studbook number 308, and sire with studbook number 362, both of whom were long-term residents of the Chengdu facility and core contributors to the early captive giant panda breeding programs that laid the foundation for modern species conservation efforts. Lu Lu’s first year of life was spent at the Chengdu base, where he received standardized veterinary care and observation as part of the base’s routine juvenile panda rearing protocols.

On September 21, 2000, his first birthday, Lu Lu was transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, where he has resided permanently in the decades since. He was integrated into the center’s coordinated captive breeding program shortly after his arrival, a national initiative designed to preserve maximum genetic diversity within the global captive giant panda population and reduce the risk of inbreeding in managed colonies. As he reached sexual maturity, his well-documented, distinct lineage from his parentage made him a particularly valuable contributor to the program’s breeding matches.

Now in his mid-20s, an advanced age for a giant panda, Lu Lu is recognized by caretakers for his consistently calm, non-aggressive temperament, which has made him a favorite among both staff and visitors to the center. His genetic material has been used to produce multiple generations of healthy captive-bred giant panda cubs, many of which have been integrated into subsequent breeding programs or selected for pre-release training to support wild population recovery efforts. Long-term observation of his health, behavior, and reproductive history has also provided researchers with critical data to refine care protocols for senior giant pandas in captivity, and to inform evidence-based policy for wild giant panda habitat protection and species recovery strategies across China.
