Miao Yin

Miao Yin (studbook number 784) is a female giant panda born on August 9, 2010, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Her mother is Cheng Gong, and her father is the panda with studbook number 496, Pan Pan, with her lineage tracing directly to the Wanglang wild giant panda population, a genetically distinct group native to Sichuan province, China. As of 2025, her physiological metrics remain consistent with the expected health benchmarks for adult captive giant pandas, with no documented chronic health conditions on record. She was transferred to Dalian Forest Zoo in Liaoning province on her first birthday, August 9, 2011, and has resided there continuously since that relocation.

As part of the ex-situ conservation education program overseen by the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens, Miao Yin serves a dual role in captive population management and public outreach. Her Wanglang wild lineage adds valuable genetic diversity to the global captive giant panda population, supporting long-term breeding program goals of maintaining robust, representative genetic diversity to reduce inbreeding risk in captive populations. She displays typical adult giant panda behavioral patterns, including devoting 10 to 12 hours each day to foraging on bamboo, with additional observed enrichment engagement consistent with best practices for captive panda welfare.

Miao Yin is one of the most popular resident species at Dalian Forest Zoo, drawing consistent interest from both domestic and international visitors each year. Her public presence supports targeted education efforts to raise awareness of the vulnerable conservation status of wild giant panda populations, as well as the broader habitat protection initiatives under way across panda range regions in China. Regular public viewing opportunities and associated educational materials at her exhibit help communicate the interconnected goals of ex-situ captive breeding and in-situ wild habitat preservation for the long-term survival of the species.
