Nuan Nuan

Nuan Nuan, a female giant panda with the global studbook number 970, was born on August 18, 2015 at Zoo Negara (National Zoo of Malaysia). She is the offspring of two giant pandas placed at the Malaysian institution under a long-term Sino-Malaysian conservation loan agreement: male Xing Xing, studbook number 631, and female Liang Liang, studbook number 632. Her birth marked a notable milestone for the bilateral cooperative conservation program, as one of the few giant panda cubs successfully born in Southeast Asian zoos at the time. Per standard protocols for international giant panda conservation partnerships, all cubs born outside of China remain part of the global managed breeding population overseen by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

In line with standard global conservation framework practices for the species, Nuan Nuan was repatriated to China on her first birthday, August 18, 2016, and was transferred to Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo in Jiangsu Province, where she has resided ever since. At the zoo, she participates in structured ex-situ conservation programming, including participation in the regional managed breeding plan for giant pandas, as well as public education initiatives. Care teams at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo monitor her behavior, diet, and overall health closely to support her well-being, and regularly share updates about her daily activities to engage the visiting public.

Nuan Nuan is known to exhibit species-typical behaviors including bamboo foraging, tree climbing, and exploratory play in her specialized enclosure, making her a popular draw for visitors to the zoo. She attracts thousands of guests annually, serving as a visible ambassador for giant panda conservation efforts and a tangible reminder of the value of cross-border collaborative wildlife protection work. Her presence at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo also supports ongoing public outreach campaigns that raise awareness of habitat loss and other threats facing wild giant panda populations in their native range in central China.
