Shuang Hao

Shuang Hao (Chinese: 双好) is a male giant panda born on July 18, 2014, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, assigned the global giant panda studbook number 913 under the registry system administered by Chinese wildlife conservation authorities. As a captive-bred individual, he is the offspring of male panda Xiong Bang (studbook number 743) and female panda Ye Ye (studbook number 767), both of which were previously housed at the Chengdu Research Base. His lineage is integrated into the national coordinated captive giant panda breeding program, a framework established to preserve the genetic diversity of the species and reduce the risk of inbreeding in managed populations.

On his first birthday, July 18, 2015, Shuang Hao was transferred to Hangzhou Zoo, where he resides permanently as of 2025. He is one of two giant pandas hosted long-term at the institution, participating in routine captive health monitoring protocols administered jointly by Hangzhou Zoo staff and the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center. His care routine includes regular veterinary check-ups, species-appropriate enrichment activities, and a diet tailored to meet the nutritional needs of adult giant pandas, with all care practices aligned with national standards for captive giant panda management.

Shuang Hao plays a core role in the zoo’s giant panda public education and conservation outreach initiatives. Known for his gentle, active temperament, he is a regular participant in scheduled public feeding demonstrations that attract millions of recreational visitors to Hangzhou Zoo each year. As a charismatic flagship species ambassador, he supports public awareness campaigns focused on giant panda wild habitat protection, and serves as a visible example of the progress of China’s captive giant panda breeding program, which has contributed to the 2016 downlisting of the species from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. His public presence also supports fundraising efforts for in-situ conservation projects targeting wild giant panda populations in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces.
