Xin Bao (#1274)

⚠️ Not the San Diego Xin Bao

Note: This page is about Xin Bao (芯宝/全运), the female born in 2021 at the Qinling Panda Research Center. She is not the San Diego Xin Bao (a different panda profiled at /pandas/xin-bao-san-diego/).

Basic Profile

Xin Bao (Chinese: 芯宝, birth name 全运) is a female giant panda born on September 15, 2021 at the Qinling Panda Research Center (秦岭大熊猫研究中心) in Shaanxi — the facility better known as Louguantai.

Her father is Qi Zai (七仔, studbook 802) — the world’s only captive-born brown giant panda, one of the Qinling region’s most famous residents. Her mother is a female panda named Ming Ming (明明) at the Qinling base; her studbook number has not been published in authoritative public records, so it is recorded as unknown here. (She is unrelated to the male Ming Ming, studbook 1098, at Yueyang.)

Naming — from National Games to Samsung

Xin Bao was born on the exact day the 14th National Games of China opened in Shaanxi, and was given the birth name Quan Yun (全运, “National Games”) to mark the occasion.

In 2022, she was adopted by Samsung, and the adoption name Xin Bao (芯宝) became her best-known name — the one used by keepers and fans today. Both names appear in records, and she answers to either.

Family

Life Journey

• 2021-09-15 — Born at the Qinling Panda Research Center (Louguantai), Shaanxi, on the opening day of the 14th National Games; named Quan Yun (全运).
• 2022 — Adopted by Samsung; renamed Xin Bao (芯宝).
• Present — Lives at the Foping facility in the Qinling Mountains (秦岭大熊猫佛坪救护繁育研究基地), where she is cared for by the Qinling conservation program.

The Qinling population — including brown pandas like Qi Zai — is managed as a largely distinct genetic group from the Sichuan populations, which makes cubs like Xin Bao important to the region’s breeding program.
