Short version

You You (佑佑, studbook #707) is a male giant panda born July 21, 2008 at the Ya'an Bifengxia Base. Son of Long Xin, he was a "World Expo Panda" in Shanghai before being sent to Yabuli in 2016 — China's coldest panda habitat, where temperatures drop below -20°C. He loves snow, understands Northeast dialect, and is nicknamed "Demolition Team Leader" for his habit of dismantling enrichment toys.

Basic Profile

You You (Chinese: 佑佑), studbook number 707, is a male giant panda born on July 21, 2008 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Ya’an Bifengxia Base. His mother is Long Xin (龙欣, studbook 516) — the “Genius Panda Mother” — making him a brother of Xi Wang, Fu Ni, Fu Wa, Qing Feng, Han Yuan, Yuan Xin/Le Bao (Korea), and others.

The World Expo Panda

In 2010, You You was one of several young pandas selected as “World Expo Pandas” displayed at Shanghai Wildlife Park during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Yabuli: China’s Coldest Panda Home (2016–present)

On July 5, 2016, You You and his half-sister Si Jia (思嘉) were transferred to the newly built Yabuli Panda Pavilion in Heilongjiang Province — the highest-latitude, coldest panda facility in China, where winter temperatures regularly drop below -20°C.

Contrary to the common belief that pandas fear cold, You You has thrived in the snowy environment. He:

  • Plays actively in snow, rolling and tumbling
  • Spends up to 6 hours daily outdoors even in winter
  • Grows a thicker winter coat with 20% higher contrast
  • Eats 40-60 kg of bamboo daily — more than he did in Sichuan

Personality and Nicknames

You You is called the “Demolition Team Leader” (拆迁大队长) for his habit of systematically dismantling enrichment structures. He is also nicknamed “Liu Genghong” (刘畊宏) after a famous fitness influencer, because his daily activity level is 1.5 times that of typical pandas.

Keepers say he understands commands in Northeast dialect (东北话). He weighs approximately 135 kg and has been described as a mix of social anxiety and social confidence — “社恐又社牛.”
