Bing Dian

Bing Dian (Chinese: 冰点), studbook number 519, is a male giant panda born on September 1, 2000 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. His mother is Bai Xue, listed under studbook number 343, and his father is Ya Pu, also known as Pan Pan with studbook number 348, both long-term residents of the Chengdu Research Base who made extensive contributions to the facility’s captive giant panda breeding program over their lifetimes. Bing Dian has resided at the Chengdu Research Base for his entire life, making him one of the longest-tenured individual pandas in the base’s current captive population.

As a fully mature adult male giant panda, Bing Dian exhibits all standard species-specific traits, including a diet consisting of over 99% bamboo, supplemented occasionally with specialized nutritional pellets and fresh produce provided by the base’s animal care team. He displays the species’ characteristic gentle, solitary behavioral patterns, with established daily routines of feeding, resting, and short periods of exploratory activity within his designated enclosure. His genetic material is formally preserved as part of regional and global efforts to maintain the genetic diversity of the managed captive giant panda population, a key component of species recovery strategies for the vulnerable taxon.

Bing Dian currently participates in the Chengdu Research Base’s integrated captive breeding and public education programs, supporting both direct conservation outcomes and broader public outreach work.
