Short version
Lan Xiang (兰香, studbook #548) is a female giant panda born July 12, 2002 at CCRCGP — one of China's first twin pair of the year alongside sister Mei Qing. Lan Xiang (Chinese: 兰香, studbook number 548), nicknamed “Lazy Imperial Consort” (懒贵妃), is a female giant panda born on July 12, 2002 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas, weighing 162 grams. She and her twin sister Mei Qing (梅清) were China’s first panda twin pair of the year.
Her mother is Ying Ying (英英) and her father is Da Di (大地). She has 12 siblings through Ying Ying, including Yang Yang (阳阳), Liang Liang (亮亮), Mei Qing (梅清), and You You (优优).
On November 30, 2003, Lan Xiang moved to Chongqing Zoo, where she has lived ever since. She is known for her gentle temperament and sedentary lifestyle — hence the nickname “Lazy Imperial Consort.”
In March 2016, Lan Xiang was sent to Ya’an Bifengxia for breeding. On July 11, 2016, at 14 years old, she gave birth to her first litter — twin cubs Yu Bao (渝宝) and Yu Bei (渝贝). This was exceptionally late for a first-time panda mother (average is ~8 years). She displayed the natural instinct to choose the stronger cub, neglecting the weaker one — a behavior observed in wild pandas.
On June 23, 2019, Lan Xiang gave birth to twin males — Shuang Shuang (双双) and Chong Chong (重重) — who would go on to form half of the famous “Four Happy Meatballs” (四喜丸子) alongside Xi Xi and Qing Qing.
On January 5, 2025, a tourist named Cao threw a cola bottle at Lan Xiang while she was eating bamboo. The panda was visibly startled — she sat up and rubbed her head with her paws. The perpetrator was detained by police, given an administrative penalty, and permanently banned from the zoo. Lan Xiang was examined and confirmed unharmed.
