Short version
Mei An (美安, studbook #653) was a female giant panda born September 22, 2006 at the Wolong Hetaoping Base. Her name, meaning "Beautiful and Safe," reflected her unusual appearance — her fur was yellowish and curly, and she was small and weak. Daughter of Guo Guo, she died at just 1 year and 5 months from acute foreign body pneumonia.
Mei An (Chinese: 美安, “Beautiful and Safe”), studbook number 653, was a female giant panda born on September 22, 2006 at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP) Hetaoping Base. Her mother was Guo Guo (帼帼, studbook 434).
Her name was chosen by her keepers to reflect both her appearance and their hopes for her: “美” (beautiful) described her unusual yellowish, curly fur, and “安” (safe/healthy) expressed their wish for her well-being, as she was noticeably thin and weak from birth.
Through her mother Guo Guo, Mei An’s siblings included Yao Yao (耀耀), Liang Liang (亮亮), Ping Ping (平平), An An (安安), Yao Man (姚蔓), Yao Xin (姚欣), and Hua Sheng (花生).
On March 1, 2008, at just 1 year and 5 months of age, Mei An died suddenly from acute foreign body pneumonia (急性异物性肺炎). Despite emergency抢救, she could not be saved.
Her brief life and unusual appearance were documented in CCRCGP records as a case study in neonatal panda care and vulnerability.
