Meng Yuan

Meng Yuan (Chinese name 梦圆, studbook number 1261) is a male giant panda born on August 31, 2019 at Zoo Berlin. He is the offspring of Jiao Qing and Meng Meng, two adult giant pandas loaned to Germany by China under a long-term collaborative conservation breeding agreement. Both of his parents are genetically valuable individuals registered in the global giant panda conservation management program, making his birth a notable outcome of cross-border species preservation efforts. In line with standard international panda loan protocols, he returned to China in 2022 to join the national captive breeding population, and has resided at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding since his transfer.

As a young adult male, Meng Yuan exhibits standard species-specific behaviors, with bamboo making up the vast majority of his daily diet, and regular engagement in scent-marking activities common to his demographic. He is integrated into the Chengdu Research Base’s coordinated captive breeding program, which is designed to maintain the genetic diversity of the global captive giant panda population and reduce the risk of inbreeding in the managed herd. His status as an individual born outside of China brings unique genetic value to the breeding pool, supporting long-term species resilience goals.

Meng Yuan also plays a key role in the base’s public education outreach initiatives. His widely documented early life at Zoo Berlin drew significant public interest in Germany and across Europe, and his return to China has fostered continued cross-border engagement with giant panda conservation efforts. Visitors to the Chengdu Research Base can observe him in his naturalistic enclosure, with educational materials highlighting his cross-border origin to emphasize the value of international collaboration in protecting threatened endemic species. As of 2024, he remains in good health and is expected to contribute to future breeding cycles as part of the official global giant panda conservation strategy.
