Narrative

Life story

Start with a concise summary, then continue into the full narrative record for Miao Miao.

Short version

⚠️ Two pandas named Miao Miao: This page documents the famous Chengdu panda, studbook #855 (娇淼淼 / 六水公主 / 影后淼). A different, unrelated individual — Hai Miao Miao (海淼淼, #863), the 2013 twin sister of Xin Xin (#862), daughter of Hai Zi (#544), who died in autumn 2014 — is documented here. Do not mix them up.

Basic Profile

Miao Miao (Chinese: 淼淼), studbook number 855, is a female giant panda born on September 4, 2012 at the Sun Nursery (太阳产房) of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Jiao Zi (娇子, studbook 425) and her father is Yong Yong (勇勇, studbook 584); her maternal grandmother is Bing Bing (冰冰) of the “蓬蓬脸 / 白德耀斯” family line.

She was born severely dehydrated; keepers named her “淼” (three waters) with the wish that she would grow up healthy. Because Jiao Zi produced no milk, three foster mothers — Yuan Yuan (园园), Cheng Ji (成绩) and Li Li (莉莉) — took turns raising her, which shaped her quiet, sensitive personality.

Aliases: Miao Gongzhu (淼公主), Jiao Miao Miao (娇淼淼), Liu Shui Gongzhu (六水公主), Ying Hou Miao (影后淼, “Best-Actress Miao”), Tan Xin Miao (谭心淼, Grandpa Tan’s treasured panda), Xiao Wo Niu (小蜗牛, “Little Snail”).

Siblings (all by dam Jiao Zi): elder sisters Ke Lin (科琳), Da Jiao (大娇); elder brothers Xiao Jiao (小娇), Jiao Yang (娇阳), Jiao Xiao (娇小), Jiao Qing (娇庆); younger sister San Er (仨儿). Paternal half-siblings: Ao Li Ge (奥莉奥, #839) and Yuan Run (园润, #853).

2015-11-05: Graduated from the nursery into Villa No. 2.
2015-12-30: Transferred to Dujiangyan Panda Valley — forming the “Coal-Mining Trio” (挖煤三巨头, “Ao Family Coal Group”) with Ao Li Ge and Yuan Run.
