Ou Hin

Ou Hin, known in Chinese as 樱浜, is a female giant panda with the international studbook number 930, officially recorded in the global giant panda studbook managed by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. She was born on December 2, 2014, at Adventure World, a zoo and amusement park complex in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan that has operated collaborative giant panda research and public exhibition programs with Chinese conservation institutions since the 1990s. Her father is Ei Mei, or Yong Ming (studbook number 390), and her mother is Rau Hin, or Mei Mei (studbook number 515), both captive-bred giant pandas that resided at Adventure World at the time of Ou Hin’s birth as part of the long-running Sino-Japanese giant panda conservation cooperation initiative.

Ou Hin was transferred to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China on her first birthday, December 2, 2015, and has resided at the facility since that time. The Chengdu Research Base is a leading global institution focused on giant panda captive breeding, species protection, and habitat restoration research, and Ou Hin is an active participant in the base’s core captive breeding and public education programming. She follows the species-typical herbivorous diet dominated by bamboo, consistent with standard care protocols for captive giant pandas.

Her transfer to China was structured to support the genetic diversity management of the global captive giant panda population, a core pillar of the species’ long-term conservation strategy designed to reduce inbreeding risk and maintain a viable, self-sustaining captive population. A popular attraction for visitors to the Chengdu Research Base, Ou Hin also serves as a high-profile ambassador for giant panda conservation efforts, helping to raise global public awareness of the threats facing wild giant panda populations and the ongoing work to protect both the species and its native mountain forest habitat in southwestern China.
