Fu Ban

Fu Ban (Chinese name 福伴, studbook number 1033) is a male giant panda born on August 7, 2016, at Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna, Austria. He was the second giant panda cub successfully born at the Vienna zoo, a milestone in the facility’s long-running collaborative conservation partnership with Chinese wildlife authorities. His parents are Long Hui (studbook number 390) and Yang Yang (studbook number 512), two giant pandas loaned to Tiergarten Schönbrunn under a formal international giant panda conservation agreement designed to support ex situ breeding of the vulnerable species. Fu Ban’s birth was widely celebrated in both Austria and China, as it marked a rare successful captive giant panda birth outside the species’ native range.

On his first birthday, August 7, 2017, Fu Ban was formally transferred to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) in Sichuan, China, as part of the standard terms of the international panda loan agreement, which requires all cubs born overseas to be repatriated to China once they reach appropriate age for integration into the national captive breeding program. The CCRCGP manages the world’s largest captive giant panda population, and Fu Ban joined the center’s coordinated species survival initiative upon arrival, with his genetic background adding valuable diversity to the program’s breeding pool.

In his current role within the CCRCGP program, Fu Ban supports two core conservation goals for giant pandas: first, his unique lineage from two breeding individuals housed long-term in Europe enhances the genetic diversity of the global captive population, reducing inbreeding risk and improving the long-term viability of captive groups that support wild reintroduction efforts. Second, his high-profile birth in Austria and subsequent repatriation has helped raise global public awareness of giant panda conservation needs, particularly the importance of cross-border collaborative programs that combine ex situ breeding expertise with habitat protection for wild giant panda populations in the protected mountain ranges of southwestern China. As of 2024, he remains in residence at the CCRCGP, participating in ongoing breeding and conservation research activities.
