Life Journey

Wang Wang was selected for the Australia-China cooperative research program after the agreement was signed on September 6, 2007 in Sydney, witnessed by Chinese President Hu Jintao and Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

On October 21, 2009, Wang Wang underwent a 30-day pre-departure quarantine at the Ya’an Bifengxia Base. He and Fu Ni departed Bifengxia on November 27, 2009 aboard a special flight, arriving at Adelaide Airport in South Australia on November 28, 2009. They became the first giant pandas ever to live in the Southern Hemisphere.

The original 10-year agreement was extended by five years in 2019. Despite five breeding attempts through artificial insemination, Wang Wang and Fu Ni did not produce cubs.

On November 15, 2024, after 15 years in Australia, Wang Wang and Fu Ni returned to China. They were transported to the Wolong Shenshuping Base (China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda) for a month-long quarantine.
