Short version
Cheng Lang (成浪, studbook #1173) is a female giant panda born June 11, 2019 at Chengdu Base. Daughter of Cheng Da (成大, 824) and Mei Lan (美兰, 649), she made headlines as the lightest newborn panda in recorded history at just 42.8 grams. She survived intensive neonatal care and grew into a healthy, active panda.
Basic Profile
Cheng Lang (Chinese: 成浪), studbook number 1173, is a female giant panda born on June 11, 2019 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Cheng Da (成大, studbook 824), a daughter of the Chengdu matriarch Cheng Ji, and her father is Mei Lan (美兰, studbook 649), the first giant panda born at Zoo Atlanta.
World Record Birth
At birth, Cheng Lang weighed just 42.8 grams — the lightest newborn giant panda cub in recorded history. She broke the previous record of 51 grams held by Wu Yi (五一) since 2006. Her tiny size made international headlines, and she required intensive neonatal care to survive.
Survival and Growth
Under the dedicated care of the Chengdu Base’s panda team, Cheng Lang defied the odds. From her fragile 42.8-gram start, she steadily gained weight and developed normally, eventually reaching the typical size of a healthy sub-adult panda.
As of 2026, Cheng Lang continues to live at the Chengdu Research Base, where she has grown into a healthy adult female.
