Short version

He Feng is a male giant panda born on August 9, 2016, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan, China. He is registered under studbook number 1028 in the global giant panda studbook maintained by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, a standardized registry that tracks lineage, health, and demographic data for all managed giant pandas worldwide. His father is Mei Lan (美兰), a well-documented captive giant panda, and his mother is Cheng Gong (成功), both long-term residents of the Chengdu Research Base, with confirmed maternal and paternal lineages recorded in the base’s official breeding records.

He Feng was raised at the Chengdu Research Base and has since been transferred to the Shanghai Zoo, where he currently resides. As a healthy, well-documented young adult male with a distinct lineage, he remains part of China’s coordinated giant panda conservation framework, which works to preserve and enhance genetic diversity within the global captive giant panda population.

He Feng displays typical species-specific behavioral patterns, including spending an average of 10 to 12 hours per day foraging and consuming bamboo sourced from sustainably managed local forests in Sichuan. He has been a popular public attraction, drawing both domestic and international visitors each year, and his public enclosure is frequently used as part of educational outreach initiatives to raise awareness of giant panda habitat loss, conservation needs, and the role of captive breeding programs in species protection.
