Basic Profile
⚠️ Not the panda going to the United States This page is Ping Ping (平平), studbook #951 — a male born in 2015 who has lived at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo since 2017. The Ping Ping selected for Zoo Atlanta in 2026 is a different individual of the same name: Ping Ping (平平, #1230), a male born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base, who will travel together with Fu Shuang (福双, #1250). Another same-named female, Ping Ping (#704), lives at Shunan Bamboo Sea.
Ping Ping (Chinese: 平平) is a male giant panda born on June 27, 2015, at the Ya’an Bifengxia Base. He holds the global studbook number 951.
His mother is Qian Qian (芊芊, studbook #650). He has siblings including twin brother Ya Xing (雅星), and sisters Qian Jin (芊金), Qian Zhen (芊真), and Qian Xin (芊心).
Nickname
Ping Ping’s distinctive facial markings form a “囧” (jiong) character shape — an internet meme face. This earned him the nickname “囧裁” (Jiong Cai), meaning “Jiong Boss.”
Life at Nanjing
On October 16, 2017, Ping Ping was transferred from Ya’an to Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. He quickly adapted, gaining weight from 70 kg to 100 kg by June 2018. He initially was picky about the zoo’s specially made wowotou (panda bread) but eventually acquired a taste for it. After trying various bamboo types, he showed a preference for mao bamboo leaves.
On June 27, 2018, Ping Ping celebrated his 3rd birthday — his first birthday in Nanjing — with fans who brought him a special frozen treat made of bamboo leaves, apples, and carrots.

80 Years of Panda Diplomacy: From Wartime Gifts to Global Research Loans
Trace the transformation of giant panda diplomacy from 1941, when Soong Mei-ling gifted the first pandas to America, through the landmark 1972 Nixon-era exchange, to today's international research loan agreements that channel millions of dollars annually into wild habitat conservation. This is the untold story of how a reclusive mountain bear became the world's most powerful diplomatic animal.

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang: The 2026 Return of Giant Pandas to Atlanta
On September 27, 2026 at 02:55, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang boarded a charter flight from Chengdu Shuangliu Airport and landed safely at Zoo Atlanta at 08:55 US time the same day, opening a 10-year conservation stay with a three-month quarantine overseen by Chinese staff — the closing chapter of a timeline that opened with Zoo Atlanta's April 2026 agreement and the September 24 White House announcement. This is the next chapter of a panda story that began at the zoo in 1999: 25 years of cooperation, seven Atlanta-born cubs, the 2024 homecoming, and now a new partnership.
